Cultural Appropriation - 2016/08/09
Lately people have begun to complain, especially around Halloween, about 'cultural appropriation', something that I don't quite understand why it should be negative. I can understand how it can be annoying in some circumstances, but by getting pissed just because someone is dressing up as a Geisha for Halloween is quite pathetic, mostly because all actual foreigners I have talked to really don't give a shit, if anything they laugh a bit. The only people who actually do most of the complaining are the third generation immigrants and later. No one else cares. My dad is an immigrant from Spain, does he get offended when people dress up as a Flamenco dancer or stereotype Spanish culture? I haven't seen him (if so he can correct me later, in which case I'll point out his bullshit). Not only that, but it seems that we only get angry when it is 'cultural appropriation' from cultures that are not typically white. You never see people talking about 'culturally appropriating' the Germans, the French, or even the Russians. Why? Because they're white, and apparently nothing bad ever happens to white people.

So, basically, it's quite pathetic and childish to say "You can't do this because it belongs to my culture.". Who cares? Ever thought that I might have a genuine interest in that culture? Or maybe we just want to have a little fun? Of course, with the latter argument the response is usually "Your fun is at the expense of stereotyping an entire culture" or something of the sort. I understand the argument if they were applying the stereotype (when not attempting to troll the other party) in an argument rather than actual reason and empirical evidence, that's quite childish behavior, but even then I don't see why to get upset. They're simply being stupid, just ignore them and move on with your life. You don't have to agree with everyone you associate with!

However, right now we're just talking about the Halloween accidents, which in general I don't like Halloween because it's just another holiday for people to spend a shit ton of money on costumes, decorations, candy, and other shit. So if by promoting this cultural appropriation shit we could only get rid of these stupid holidays then I'm fine (even though I still think it's stupid). Where this thing gets on my nerves is when simply taking advantage of certain aspects of a culture that you view as superior to your own in order to improve your lifestyle, or your aesthetic appearance (or whatever the fuck), this group of people with sticks up their ass come and say that I'm culturally appropriating and that it's bad and I shouldn't do it. If you didn't know, I'm quite interested in Japanese culture ever since I started learning their language, and while learning about their culture I take aspects and apply them to my own life because I find them to be superior to that of my cultures (being those of the U.S. and Spain). This is something that I argue is very important, if we want to improve as a society we need to learn from each other, not simply stick to what's ours because we made it. That's one of the most bigoted ideas I can think of (and they call me a bigot for this, they might as well look up the damn definition and find that it doesn't mean "someone who does something I don't like"). So what is wrong with me trying to improve myself as a person? Just because I take one thing from a culture does not mean I have to make use of the entire culture. Why do I want the bad parts of a culture? Even my own. There are parts of American and Spanish culture that I reject because I find them destructive and/or pointless. So why should I accept parts of a foreign culture that I also find destructive and/or pointless? That's precisely what I'm trying to avoid!

Please, stop making out to be a bad thing that some of us actually want to continue cultural evolution and improve ourselves as compared you the dumb asses who think that culture is some all-or-nothing package you buy at a supermarket. Who's being culturally insensitive now? Still me? Fine, then you can fuck off with your decadence.
