The Communist Leisure Society - 2016/09/01
It's sad that although a Communist Leisure Society is very possible that we are not at all heading in that direction, if anything we're headed in the opposite direction of such a society. In the current Capitalist system as jobs are replaced by machines those people who were previously doing the job are put into unemployment and must find a way to get another job, while in a Communist Leisure Society they could simply pay more attention to their leisure activities, creating things that they actually have a passion for creating. Automation is something fundamental to a Communist Leisure Society. All jobs that can be automated, which are many, would be and the people that were previously doing those jobs that otherwise don't need to be can now focus on other tasks allowing our society to move forward at a much faster pace, the only limit being the natural resources that the Earth can replenish.

A Communist Society on its own would already allow us to work many less hours, considering that we already produce more than enough for everyone on Earth to live a decent lifestyle, it's simply that the distribution is failing. Therefore, in a Communist Society, it should be possible to distribute the labor and the products of said labor in such a way that there is no need for everyone to work as many hours. Now adding the automation that is possible with modern technology we are now able to work even less, and if our mentality and culture have changed by this point it is possible to have everyone doing productive things with much better efficiency since it's something that they're interested in.

Such a society is by no means impossible, yet there are a few barriers to surpass before arriving at such a society. The first being the Capitalist system itself, we would need to overthrow it, something that many aren't willing to do since they benefit from said system or they simply don't see the issue with it, or simply are scared of what comes after. The second being people's mentality, we cannot have a leisure society where people simply sit around and watch TV all day, at that point we have turned into nothing but a consumer society, in which case I would prefer Capitalism of such a hell. The second of these is something that the Anarchists point out very often and something that many Communists and Socialists often forget about that I have held in importance since when I considered myself an Anarchist. If we try to change society without changing people's mentality we will never get anywhere, yet changing people's mentality is the most difficult task. In the Soviet Union of their flaws was that everyone was still thinking in terms of consumption instead of lifestyle. In its beginnings the Soviet Union could give its people a decent lifestyle, it wasn't until the Arms Race that life in the Soviet Union became harsh.

Either way, such a society is quite possible, the only issue is that it would take a lot to get to that point, and sacrifices to many people's lifestyles which are not sustainable, much less in a leisure society.
